Event Spotlight
Every year on the first Saturday in May, the world turns its attention to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, for one of the most iconic events in American sports: the Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby was first run in 1875, making it the longest continuously held sporting event in the United States. It was inspired by the Epsom Derby in England and established by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., grandson of explorer William Clark.
The race, now 1.25 miles long, is the first leg of the Triple Crown. Only 13 horses have achieved this feat, with Justify being the most recent in 2018.
